Good Afternoon, my name is Henry Kittle, Preferred Moving and Storage located in Macomb county, Harrison Township, Michigan. Have you ever thought about what it takes to hire a good professional mover. Well, today I am here to talk a little bit about what you should do, give some thought to, why you need to check their credentials. Do they belong to local better business fare. This gives you a pretty good sense of how that mover is rated in there, in their local community, or maybe at your own local community also you may want to check with AMSA if you’re moving long distance AMSA stands for American Moving and Storage Association that has came up with a standard known as pro mover. What they did, in the last couple years, is gone through every single mover that belongs to their organization and personally verified that they are licensed, insured, and everything that they say they are, and should be. Another thing that you might want to consider when hiring a mover is do they have the proper insurance. When we talk about proper insurance there is 3 insurances that you want to be concerned with.

One is called general liability. That means that if they, hit your house, or, crack your driveway, things of that nature, that would be covered in the general liability. The, second option, and, what I like to think of as most important, is, do they have worker’s comp? Most homeowners are unaware of, that if you hire a work, and he does not have workers comp, and he gets hurt on your property, he can now sue you. The purpose of a company having worker’s comp, is this prevents the employee from suing the homeowner. A third option.

Is what most people think of when they ask about insurance, it’s called cargo liability insurance. Meaning, our intruble goods insured while in transit. And although the answer to that is yes, if you use licensed mover. There are certain state requirements, that will vary state by state on local requirements. And long distance is kind of across the board. But to give you a brief overview, cargo insurance, insurance in the state of Michigan. It’s 50 cents per pound per article. And what we call a local moving zone, which is typically.

40 miles from point A to point B. Second, would be, if you’re moving above 40 miles. It’s known as  mode, and and you have 60 cents per pound. The third option is you can purchase replacement protection from the mover. This will give you the ultimate protection, but it comes at a premium cost to you. Have you ever known anyone that’s moved, and something got damaged? And the first question that the customer has is, my stuff is insured, correct? And the mover says, well, no sir, it wasn’t. And you’re thinking, well I paid you. Well, there is.

A couple of different options when you’re moving, that, the consumer should be aware of. When you move locally, you have, in the state of Michigan, what we call 50 cents per pound per article liability. Intra is a little different, it goes 60 cents per pound. And again, if you’re moving long distance, it would also be 60 cents per pound. These are all general liabilities that a licensed professional mover has to give you as required by law. Now, it’s not a great protection.

But it is, it is the law, and they’re required to provide you with such. Now when you are moving international you would actually purchase a insurance certificate from an insurance company and there’s a fine line in a court of law between liability and ah insurance and most people think if we damage something then it’s insured to its full value. When in truth the reality is a mover has a liability of the actual cost of the item meaning that there can be no sentimental value. Case in point we have photo album has no value, although I mean its everything in the world to you, it has no cash value. So from libation standpoint you want to think in cash value. Some cash have a cash value.

There are some third party providers out there that will sell you insurance company. That if you needed to cover some, sentimental values and things like that. Another, good starting point would be to check with your homeowners, and see if you’re covered. Or if you can purchase an additional rider, which.

Might save you money, if, if doing it that way versus buying it from the moving company, but, just so you kinda know if, we dropped a TV, and let’s say it a 27 inch TV, at 60 cents per pound or, or let’s say 50 cents per pound, that TV may weigh 50 pounds, you now have $25 of liability coverage at to move house provided by law. But if you had purchased additional replacement coverage, that TV would be covered at today’s replacement cost.

That at what you bought it at is at today’s replacement cost. So those are a couple things that you, are important to you to, to know about and to decide which way you wanna do, as far as how you’re going to select your liability coverage. You wanna make sure that you understand it before the movers start moving you. Once your move is started, it’s too late to make that decision. You need to make it just before the guys start.
