Don’t Be Confused by the Logo on Your Moving Van

You have received your moving estimates, carefully chosen your mover and prepared your house for moving day.  But when all is said and done, you may still not fully understand how your local moving company is affiliated with the major van line that will be transporting your household goods to another state.   Being an informed consumer is the best way to avoid a bad moving experience.

As you begin your search for a mover, you will come across four primary players and it is crucial that you know who they are and understand what they do.

Van Lines – This is just another word for a large moving company.  Each major van line has special authority to move household goods from one state to another.  There are approximately 25 major van lines and each is owned and operated separately with corporate structures that include both public and private companies.  Wheaton World Wide Moving is currently the fifth largest van line in the United States.

Van Line Agents – As you receive moving quotes, you probably think that you are dealing with a van line, but you are actually dealing with one of its agents.  These agents have agreed to abide by certain quality guidelines established by the van lines in order to operate under the licensing authority, much like a franchise.   These agents usually own their own local moving business but also perform long distance moves in conjunction with a major van line.

Independent or Full Service Carriers – These independent carriers do not have a van line affiliation.  There are over 1,200 independent moving companies providing interstate service under their own licenses.  Due to a lack of affiliation with a van line, there is a higher degree of risk associated with utilizing an independent moving company.  Do some additional research on these carriers to ensure that you will receive the level of service and experience that you want for your move.

Moving BrokersDo not be fooled by fly-by-night moving brokers who simply arrange relocations without a vested interest in your move.  These brokers do not own any trucks or equipment and they may outsource your move to a company that does not have the right credentials or equipment to provide you with the service or peace-of-mind that you deserve.

Before you sign a contract with any interstate mover, be sure to ask specific questions of which van line they are affiliated with.  Use available resources to research both your local agent as well as the van line.  Comparing information and using reliable organizations such as the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org), the American Moving and Storage Association (www.moving.org), and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (www.fmcsa.dot.gov) can help ensure that you will have the best moving experience possible.

Preferred Moving & Storage is an agent for Wheaton World Wide Moving.  We partnered with Wheaton in 1984 for interstate relocation services.  We chose Wheaton because of their outstanding reputation for quality service and their unparalleled ‘customer first’ philosophy.    The current network of Wheaton agents across the country has grown to over 250 well respected agencies, all working together to provide the highest quality of interstate relocation services.

What to Look for When Hiring a Professional Local Mover in Michigan

The first thing you need to do is determine exactly what moving services you want an estimate on.   Local moving can involve moving the entire contents of your house or you may just want the large items moved.  Do you need the movers to do any packing of boxes?  Do you have any storage needs? Are there any special attention items (piano, pool table, artwork)? Once the services are determined, make sure that every mover provides a quotation based on the same services.

Movers will provide a quotation over the phone, by email or by performing an in-home surveyAn in-home estimate is really the best option.  This provides your potential moving company with the best information.  They will be able to see everything you plan to move and exactly what services are needed.  Your moving company representative will be in a much better position to offer suggestions and give you ideas on how and where you can save money.  They can observe access to your residence and any unexpected obstacles.  This way, there will be no hidden surprises (or costs) come moving day!

If you prefer a phone estimate or on-line quotation, keep in mind that these types of estimates are only as accurate as the information you supply.  A reputable moving company will ask you lots of questions about things that you may not think of (access at current and new residence, assembly/disassembly needs, stairs).  Be wary of the moving company that does not ask questions.

Price should not be the only factor when hiring a local moving company. Extremely low bids should raise a red flag! If an estimate is way out of line with the others, it is probably too good to be true.  There are a lot of rogue movers out there that will take advantage of the unsuspecting.  Poor quality movers can really be worse than hiring none at all.

The professional moving companies that you solicit bids from should all have state licensing numbers and be licensed and insured.  They should be able to provide you with proof of their general liability coverage as well as their workers comp coverage.  The general liability insurance protects your residence and workers comp protects you from a potential lawsuit should a worker get hurt on your job.

When making your decision on hiring a professional mover, do your homework and take the time to investigate the company you are considering.

  • Check their references and on-line reviews.
  • Look at their Better Business Bureau rating.
  • Are they a member of the American Moving & Storage Association?
  • Do they maintain full-time employees that undergo drug testing and background checks?
  • Do have the proper vehicles and equipment to handle every aspect of your move?

Mostly importantly, you should be comfortable with the local moving company that you hire to move your life’s most treasured possessions. If you have taken the time to do your research, you will have piece of mind come moving day that your belongings will be handled by a company that is reputable, experienced and provides their services at an affordable price.
