Moving Tip: Budgeting for Your Relocation Move

Budgeting for Your Relocation Move

Are you planning a relocation in the near future?  If so, you will want to start by preparing a relocation budget.

No matter where you are moving to, you will want to be sure to select a moving and storage company that listens to your needs and works with you to stay within your relocation budget.  You will want to meet face-to-face with your Relocation Consultant so that they can actually see what items are being moved, what your packing requirements are, and if you have any special attention items.  The last thing you need are surprises and added costs on moving day!   Tell your Relocation Consultant how much of the work you want to do yourself.  This will allow the moving company to prepare an accurate estimate of the moving costs, and even offer suggestions on additional ways you can save money.

If your move is just across town and your relocation budget is tight, ask your Relocation Consultant for suggestions on ways you can best prepare your home for the movers on moving day.  The little things can save time and money.

  • Unplug and wrap cords to all electrical items in the home.
  • Disassemble all beds and mirrors from dressers.
  • Our company provides wardrobe cartons for all hanging clothing.  We are happy to pack them for our customers, but many prefer to transfer their clothing themselves while we are moving the heavy items.
  • Move all open boxes that are not sealed, the smaller boxes, and plants in your vehicle.
  • If moving during the winter months, be sure to have all driveways and walkways shoveled and salted before the truck arrives.

If your relocation will be a long distance move, your budget will involve much more planning.  You need to be realistic of taking on too much of the work yourself.  For example, if you tell your moving company that you will be doing all of your own packing and do not get it done as planned, it could add hundreds of dollars to your relocation budget.  When moving out of state, the driver cannot come back the following day and finish what does not get done.  Drivers are assigned loads well in advance and do not usually have an extra day between loading, driving, and their scheduled deliveries.

The following are items that you may want to be sure not to overlook that can highly impact your relocation budget.  These are all costs that many individuals do not think of and include when establishing their relocation budget.

  • House hunting trips may require flying to your new location to look for a new home.  These trips can be expensive and may require car rental costs and overnight stays at a motel.  Be sure to include all out-of-town expenses in your budget (meals, airport parking, kennels for your pets, etc.)
  • Non-perishable foods, which includes everything in your refrigerator and freezer, will need to be replaced.  This can costs several hundreds of dollars.
  • Did you leave your appliances at your old residence?  Buying $5,000 worth of new appliances in a state that has a 2% higher sales tax will cost you an additional $100 on your purchase.
  • Transporting your extra vehicle to your new home can add hundreds of dollars to your relocation budget.  The average car carrier price to transport a vehicle from Detroit to Los Angeles is $1,000.  Even if you plan to drive the vehicle yourself, be sure to budget for extra gas along the way.

Moving Tip: Separate and Inventory Your Items

Hi, Shawn Cook with Preferred Moving and Storage, agent for Wheaton Van Lines. We’re located in Harrison Township, Michigan (Macomb County).

Today, we are in the home of a customer of ours in Oakland Township, Michigan (Oakland County). We are moving them from West Bloomfield, Michigan, to our storage facility in Harrison Township, Michigan. Today, I’m here with Michael, a driver of ours, one of our top drivers. And he is doing the inventory process, which is one of the initial processes in the move. What he is doing when he inventories is separating items that may go to different directions. For instance, the customer has a move point to Illinois, and one going to Virginia. Items are going to be inventoried separately with different colored tags. This is detrimental, because we want to make sure that we are itemizing everything that is going on our truck. So when it is delivered, it will also be itemized and checked in as it comes off the truck. Again, a very important process. Each box or piece of furniture, is stickered, inventoried and itemized accordingly.

If you are considering a local move, long distance move or an international move, consider Preferred Moving and Storage.   Visit our website at www.preferredmoving.net or give us a call at 800-837-4600.

Moving Tips – Rug Runners and Carpet Shield Protect Your Floors When Moving

Hi, Shawn Cook, Preferred moving and storage, agent for Wheaton Van Lines. We’re in one of my customer’s homes in Bloomfield, Michigan (Oakland County). What we have going on today is very detrimental. You always want to lay floor protection. What it does is creates pathways for our movers to work. It cuts down on traffic on the remainder of the homes  flooring. So, what Don is doing is laying down our rug runners. Again, creating pathways. Coming in from the front door to the bedroom, to the kitchen. It’s very detrimental in keeping less traffic throughout  the home. It’s going to be more ideal for anybody in a situation where they’re moving. So if you would come over here with me. For carpets, for colored carpets, you don’t want traction on these things. They’re not supposed to move, when any homeowner’s moving in. So we want to keep the traction down as much as possible.

Jason is laying what we call a carpet shield. It’s a very nice shield. You’ll see it in model homes, brand new homes. They put them down when they show the homes.  They utilize this and so do we as well. So, a good process…it shows the homeowners that we do care about their home and their items. And we’ll do whatever it takes to make their move successful.

Items Not To Pack When Moving- Preferred Moving and Storage

Hi. Welcome to Preferred Moving and Storage, an agent for Wheaton Van Lines. My name is Shawn Cook. I’m a relocation consultant here. We are located at 42950 Executive Drive, Harrison Township, Michigan.

You can contact us at our phone number 1(800)-837-4600. Or visit our website at www.preferredmoving.net

Today I’d like to take a moment and talk to you of ways of being pro active when you’re packing your household goods. Our professionals come in to pack and they are trained to look for items that are harmful or illegal to transport. But today, I want to take a moment and share with you a list of items that you need to be on the look for.

Starting out, when packing yourself, you’re going to be on the lookout for aerosol cans. These items are combustible- heating agents, nail polish and nail polish remover. For you ladies, those are items of high needs and necessity. So you want it, you want to separate those. You can take those yourself, remember that.

Fire extinguishers or gas in bottles would include propane tanks or oxygen.

Any ammonia, bleaches, household cleaning agents. So when you’re under that sink you need to make sure that you’re looking out for things that might be, flammable. Again, bleaches. They will eat up anything they come in contact with.

Obviously it would be acid we cannot transport. Lighter fluid, matches, lighters, things of that nature.

Any other combustibles that you can think of.  Now those are just a small list of items that you really need to be on the look out for to know that these are items we cannot transport. In addition to this list we have a small list of items that you should really consider taking up on yourself or taking yourself when you move. Items like perishable foods, plants that are just sentimentally very important to you. We will transport them, but we do not guarantee them. Prescription medications, that’s for obvious reasons, for health or medical problems.

Items of monetary value.  We will take all of these items but again, we feel more comfortable with this being with you such as: insurance policies, money, and other important documents.

So just to kind of touch base on those, again we went over a list of items we can’t pack, would be anything flammable, combustible, or anything of high flammability. And then things you should take with yourself would be things of monetary value, medical records, health records, and again, your medications. Visit us at www.preferredmoving.net, or give us a call. Call me, Sean Cook, relocation consultant here at Preferred Moving: 1(800)-873-4600.

Thank you.

When you’re about 4 weeks out, we recommend that you get packing supplies. Something that here at Preferred we do supply free packing material or we sell you packing material, depending on what your needs may be.  Secondly, in the week fourth week out, we want you to confirm a date of your move.
